Life In Thanet Kent from a different point of view
Mood:
a-ok
For anyone reading this, this is my personal view of the area I now live in.
It has changed so much in the last 15 years, what was a beautiful seaside resort, with clean beaches, lovely little shopping centres, amusements and arcades, has been turned into a concrete jungle, and not by locals, but by those in power who have moved into the area, and are turning it into a mini London, or whatever other City they are from.
My answer to this is, if you wanted a City, well bloody well go back where you came from, stop ruining other peoples towns.
15 years ago the area, was calm, laid back, nobody was in a rush.
Now its a nightmare, driving is bumper to bumper, parking is at breaking point, even the weekly shop at the supermarket is a nightmare, you can go around the carpark upto 20 times waiting to park, all day long.
The Council decided to let a new shopping development be built, demolishing good houses in the process. Well its now built, Westwood Cross......lots of free parking spaces, but sadly, for most in the area, a shopping centre too expensive to shop in. You see, once again, the elite built somewhere for them, and not joe public. This is one of the most deprived Conservative run areas in the country, with a higher than average elderly population and disabled population, so bringing in expensive shops was obviously a waste of time.
We still have to travel to Dover or Canterbury to find suitable shops.
I feel sorry for our three local town centres also. Margate- Ramsgate and Broadstairs. We have seen a decline in these as shops close now monthly.
Cliftonville was once considered to be the "cream" of Thanet, a beautiful shopping street, surrounded by lovely large houses, all individual in design. It boasted beautiful views from its cliff top locations. However, this is now nicknamed "Beirut" by locals. Every street is littered with rubbish or illegal immigrants in bed and breakfast or flats. All the big houses have been converted by greedy property developers, who cram these asylum seekers and illegal immigrants into whatever space they can. Crime is a daily problem, from shop robbery, street robbery , house break-ins, car theft and damage, to violent assaults between rival religious groups. Stabbings are the latest trend.
Sadly with property prices so high, younger local born low salaried couples or those on benefits have no option but to live amongst this, they have nowhere else to go. Trying to raise children amid this is awful. The local council are well aware of the problem, but at a meeting last year the attitude was " lets do away with Dole by the sea" ??.. seriously, they are unreal. Every town has low paid and the unemployed, but most towns dont treat those in most need like this. They were asked about building new houses, they only have about 2700 council owned properties left, and some 5000 people waiting on lists, but they said land is too expensive or we would then need more doctors and dentists, and greater water supply, when infact they would simply be housing those already in the area, so none of the above would be true.
It just seems to be an excuse. Digging deeper the reason becomes clear. The leader of the council owns property....... other councillors own property which they also rent out, so it makes no economical sense for them personally to vote for new housing, when they would lose their tenants. Also the housing if built would be affordable, allowing some families to get back into the workplace, as presently most are stuck in a catch 22... rents are on average £650 a month for 3 bed house , those on benefits and low incomes, have to make up the shortfalls on these rents, as the local housing benefits for the area are set at around £500 knowing full well, that private landlords charge more, so those in most need are really in a hole. As utility bills rise, they have a choice, keep warm- keep a roof, so most are either evicted for rent shortfalls, or are unwell due to poor living standards.
But down the street or next door, the asylum seekers or illegal immigrants dont face this, as they are protected by EU laws, they have to be supplied with basic needs, food , heat , clothes. Yet some of these same people are commiting crimes on a daily basis.
Going back to cars, the area is full of "odd " number plates, that being : cars are brought here from far off lands, never taxed, insured or registered in any way here, and the local "bandits" have realised that the police dont do anything, I mean, can you imagine how many languages the police would need to stop every car !!!.... some have got so brazen now they drive with NO number plates at all, this may all sound fiction to you, but its real... my own last two cars were both hit, on different locations, but by refugee non - insured drivers, who vanished within weeks, leaving me to pay all my excesses twice, The Local Police, said, what can we do??? we cannot arrest them, if they move or dissapear thats it, nothing else we can do. Yet if I was doing this, they have my name, where I live, my D.O.B, my national insurance number etc etc the list goes on, but for incomers its a free for all, do what you want, when you want where you want.
I know this is not a problem in just this area, its now nationwide, but its more compressed here as the area is very small, there were 56000 people here 15 years ago, today there are some 160,000 all squashed into the same area, its a recipe for disaster. And everyday, we hear sirens, and everyday watch the area slipping furthur into decline, not just from outsiders, but from our own UK born problem families, who all seem to move to coastal towns and try and be gangsters, when infact they are merely a disgrace.
What I get confused at, when the council use their excuses about building is, they never complained at the new hotel complex they have just approved on Ramsgate seafront, which will ruin the beach for locals, we hardly get to use our beaches now with city folk coming only when the sun shines. Neither did they complain at the 4 or more new residential complexes being built throughout Margate, which are now struggling to find minimum wage staff to work in them ??Hello !!!... how can people live on minimum wage in an area that has High housing costs?? common sense people.....
Now call me cynical , but these residential homes are very nice.... warden controlled, all the mod cons.... and lemme see now... most councillors are now in their late 60's.... so will soon be retiring... and will need somewhere to live and be looked after ......NO.... surely they would'nt abuse thier powers in this way?? would they?? I mean, I asked locally amongst the pensioners on my estate, who would like to move into one of these new complexes, but the answer was the same, we cannot afford to, you have to buy a unit or sell a house to pay for your keep......so.... who will be living in them? again... my brain reverts back to my first thought......
I am ending this Blog for today, as the local yobs are out in force with their fireworks, and I have to monitor my CCTV this evening now, as my vehicle as well as neighbours come under weekly attack. Most rip off mirrors or key the paintwork, but there will be the occasional break-in for a stereo.
